More than we ever hoped for

I don't know what I expected as the boys got older. I guess I thought that as they became more able they would go do their own things and give me some space. They really just became more able to demand things from me. And there's more independence (creating more mess), more scrapes, bruises, and other minor injuries, more fighting, more crabbiness.

It's not all bad, though; they are becoming more and more humorous each day. But I would just love to settle into this home that is more than we ever hoped for and have a little more calm. I must be dreaming, right?

Here's what I'm talking about.
more wrestling (and gymnastics)

I guess it's a boy thing, but we can't sit or lay down without someone climbing on us.

more elaborate train tracks

As far as playing with the boys goes, building train tracks is one of my favorite things. It is funny too, now, because Gabe likes to critique me as I build, and say things like I don't think so, not that one, that's not gonna fit! He's hilarious. The living room has become our main train area, because their bedroom is usually too messy. From time to time the boys will start to build one together, but Gabe really doesn't like it when the track goes off to nowhere and just stops, as they usually do when I don't come to the rescue.

more goofy, more cute

(a little) more time for crafting

In the last month I have finished my knitted socks and the top for Gabe's quilt. I'm not sure how, really. Possibly because the crazy times have been so crazy that anything less seems like a major break, and I take advantage of it. When I look at the socks, two things come to mind. One, there is a reason people with size 9's are not foot models, and two, I don't really need another pair of socks. I guess I made them just to see if I could. I'm hoping to finish the quilt in the next month or two. I'll be sure to take a photo of the boys who are almost bigger than the baby quilts that were made for them!

more creativity

Play-doh, painting, and coloring are still big around here. Funny how Zach prefers to write with a pencil than draw with a crayon anymore, and he likes to leave notes on scraps of paper all over the place, all with the letter "Z" on them. Gabe's scribbles are coming along too.

Inspired by Little Bear, I'm sure (because I know the episode), Zach decided to make a mole trap in the middle of the kitchen. Because they are "harmful to your garden, you know." When he was showing it to me, he described how he put the track to lead the mole up, and then he put blocks all around the trap, in case the mole wanted to play once he was in the trap. All I could do was crack up.

more requesting Chili's and McDonald's

We don't eat out that much, but we have gone to both places recently, and it is very obvious that these are their favorites. I think Zach said "it's a great day to go to Chili's" about four days in a row. And not at dinner time, first thing in the morning.

more endless energy, and more passing out

Here are some of the more tame gymnastics pics; we don't reward jumping, climbing on, or tumbling off the couch with photography, though there is plenty of that too. There's also a lot of running, and we are trying to get the yard fenced asap. Frank and I have taken tons of cute kid-asleep-on-the-couch photos, but these may be our first fell-asleep-in-the-supermarket ones.

(a little) more time outside

So far it has just been one of us hanging out with Gabe on the porch while the other goes to the mailbox with Zach. Or all of us on the deck while Frank's grilling.

more baking, and bigger appetites

It's happened...the boys went from pre-schoolers to teenagers overnight. It really seems like they never stop eating. Turns out they love any kind of muffins, but especially banana, and I'm happy to not let any brown bananas go to waste. I'm also happy to report that we are just about done with sippy cups...they are only an indulgence first thing in the morning at this point.

more questioning, more learning, more growing

As a reward for good potty training (they are both progressing well, by the way), Zach picked out this little pot with some strawberry seeds. He's very attentive to it...luckily it lives in a window of our bedroom because it's the best, safest light source.

Hello spring

Yes, spring is here in our neck of the woods. You may have noticed that I'm not getting around to updating the blog much lately... life has been much like these photos, generally beautiful, but with a bunch of crazy. Everything is good, but there's not enough time in the day. The boys are cracking us up a lot of the time; I'll post some videos soon. Hope you are enjoying spring where you are!

From my trip

I just completed this scrapbook page about my recent visit with Abby and Loic. Scroll down for easier reading and bigger pictures.

It reads:
a serene, scenic drive, the whole day
time for enjoying coffee, music, and the road
and no demands
I went to a beautiful neighborhood, with wide tree-lined streets
a lovely house, with Abby sitting on the porch in a rocking chair
like she knew I was driving up just then
I knew that the long drive was worth it
we talked about everything: babies, raising kids, houses and moving, couponing, project runway
amazing food all weekend, or maybe I was just relieved not to cook
I slept in the latest that first morning I was there
then we took a trolley downtown
Greenville is a fun, artsy place
we were blessed with amazing weather
the park with the waterfall has so much energy, but is so relaxing at the same time
the three of us sat on a swing and caught up on each other's lives
we saw artist studios, and walked
I bought myself a mug, I love the pink and purple of it and its message
dinner at the Belgian restaurant was almost magical
we didn't have reservations, but sitting at the bar was better
I had a Lindeman's framboise, steak and frites with 3 kinds of mayo
the garlic mayo was something to write home about
it all brought back memories and made me miss "our" restaurant, The Yearling
I also thought about touring Lindeman's with Barb and Ron, about how glad I was that we did such cool things while we lived over there
Abby and I went to a yoga class
a great addition to our relaxing weekend
I hadn't done yoga in years, but it didn't feel that way
a very important reason for the visit, I met Julien
of course he monopolized all moments after coming back from Grandma and Grandpa's house
playing, eating, bathing, and lots and lots of smiling
we are already thinking about the next visit

February faves

My favorite goings-on from February.

Best night in (considering all our nights are spent in!): watching the newest Twilight movie with Frank and laughing at the drama and cheesy-ness.

Funniest thing I learned this month: Zach can change the toilet paper roll and he's very pround of it :)

Favorite spot in the house: my rearranged (yes, already!) craft room. It was all set up and definitely neat, and I was starting to get organized. But I realized that the places where furniture and things landed when I unpacked was more about convenience at the time and less about what I actually needed. My computer needed to be in a spot where I have more space to spread out, so that bills, etc. weren't filling up my craft table.

So this new arrangement puts my craft table closer to my supplies and my computer closer to the file cabinet and more space for paperwork. And somehow it feels bigger, too! Next on my wishlist are some kind of desk to replace the computer cart and folding table and a comfy chair...

Favorite grocery items: microwave lentils from Costco (like a chili/soup), topped with a little packet of Wholly Guacamole. And this time I chopped up a couple slices of deli turkey and mixed them in.

Sweetest memories: bedtime stories with Jen, Ben, Maggie, Gabe, and Zach, and shooting the breeze with Abby and Loic on a swing in downtown Greenville. Both weekends were a complete blast :)

When they're cute and hilarious

On days where everyone is crabby, and no one is listening to me or behaving (to the point of having tv taken away for the day), these funny videos come in handy. This was a couple weeks ago.

I'm back from Abby's and have lots to share about that great (if short) visit. I'm hoping to post some stuff soon.
